Doctoral field study: self-organization and adaptation in agile teams

A field study of twenty-eight agile teams across five countries: how they self-organized, how they learned, and why some genuinely adapted while others performed adaptation without changing at all. This is where the biological framing of organizational adaptation first took shape — a decade before the model was named.

Where the model sits in the literature

The model is built on named shoulders, and says so. Its absorption architecture stands in the tradition of absorptive-capacity research (Cohen and Levinthal, 1990; Zahra and George, 2002). Its treatment of the organization as a living system descends from open-systems theory (Katz and Kahn, 1966) and Stafford Beer's Viable System Model. Its constraint logic descends from the Sprengel–Liebig law of the minimum through Goldratt's Theory of Constraints. And its Elimination capability draws on the organizational unlearning literature begun by Hedberg (1981). The contribution is the combination: five independently assessable capabilities of change itself — including Elimination, which absorptive capacity has never had — bounded by the weakest, at the level of the organization.
